Comprehensive Anti-Counterfeiting Solution for the Pharmaceutical Industry
Global threat of counterfeit drugs
Highly‐organized drug diversion and counterfeiting schemes involve various illicit activities including the adulteration, re‐labeling, theft, illegal importation and improper storage of prescription drugs.
The perpetrators are also found working in various jobs along the pharmaceutical supply chain: pharmacists, wholesalers, printers, distributors, etc.

End-to-End Anti-Counterfeiting Solutions for Pharmaceutical Companies
High-Security Labels
NanoMatriX’s multi-level anti-counterfeit labels with embedded, overt, covert and forensic features help empower the pharmaceutical industry maintain their product integrity and brand reputation.
The security graphic features are designed through special anti-counterfeiting software to create a non-duplicable image through mathematical algorithms. For example, guilloche, relief, latent, etc. All of these features are created or combined with other security graphic features.
- Guilloche: Form of two or even more interwoven fine lines to generate specific patterns by mathematical algorithms. The structure of design is intricate and repetitive pattern which can prevent any fabrication or duplication.
- Relief: Line patterns with line width modulation, wavy line patterns and which can enhance convex and three-dimensional display effect of graphics.
- Anti-copy: Combination of special line patterns and graphics to form a graphic in split lines. Split lines appear when the magnifying glass is used. The split lines can serve as anti-copy lines, thereby being blurred out when photo-copies are made from the original document.
- Latent image: Hidden patterns or texts. Integration of parallel lines, Guilloche and patterns as a hidden anti-counterfeiting to covert information. The hidden image or text appears when observing the image with a specific optical angle.
- Microtext: Tiny texts that can only be viewed when magnified. Any reproduction machine is unable to identify and copy the microtext but in dotted or solid line because of downgrading resolution after scanning or photocopying.
Holographic Labels
Our hologram brand protection solutions comprise multi-level security holographic labels with overt, covert and forensic features suited for the pharmaceutical industry.
Tamper-evident features and security taggants in the holographic security stickers help to ensure that pharmaceutical companies identify parallel trading, counterfeits, warranty return fraud, or production overrun.
MatriX-Mark Solutions (Unique Anti-Copy Chemical Markers)
The Taggant uses special nontoxic pigments to inscribe product identifiers on outer containers, primary packaging, or in the product themselves. These forgery-proof taggants are invisible to the human eye.
Once the taggant is placed within a consumable item, it will need a specialized sensor for accurately recognizing it and signaling its presence. You have to mark your consumable containers with MatriX-Mark™ taggant ink and equip the detectors or scanners with specialized sensors from NanoMatriX.
TrackMatriX® SaaS Solutions
TrackMatriX® allows brand owners to take advantage of a self-service platform that enables product authentication while providing an opportunity to engage with customers via QR codes or NFC tags.
Using TrackMatriX®, pharmaceutical companies will be able to monitor high-value product flows, gain deep consumer and supply chain insights / data sets, and leverage automatic reporting of counterfeiting attempts.
The platform provides brand owners deep consumer and supply chain insights regarding their pharmaceutical products like real-time GPS location, scanning frequencies and even suspicious activity alerts. Meanwhile such data is also transferable to complement the client’s CRM/ERP/POS systems, thereby adding further value to the client’s consumer database.
TrackMatriX® Geo / Lock / Cycle
TrackMatriX® NFC
TrackMatriX® NFC allows for a secure form of data exchange which can be used to authenticate individual products. Consumers can obtain different kinds of product information prior to opening or after opening (e.g. products specification, location tracking, storage temperature, or any other vital information).

Use Cases
Holographic Labels: Hong Kong Pharmaceutical Brand
Problem
An established pharma brand in Hong Kong has decided to launch for the first time a series of their strongest-selling products in China. Entering this new market, the management was aware that they are exposing themselves to the following material and immaterial risks:
- Counterfeiting: Without a brand protection device, it will be difficult to differentiate between original and fake products.
- Pilferage / Package Tampering: The product package might be opened before purchase and the original content be exchanged or diluted.
Solution
In order to ensure their customers, as well as their own staff, and potentially law enforcement officers will be able to differentiate the original product from counterfeits, they asked NanoMatriX to help with a sophisticated brand protection label.
To prevent pilferage or product tampering, the security label has been designed so that it can be pasted across the edge of the package and the package lid. Additional security features applied at the substrate and the design elements will make sure that unauthorized opening of the package will definitely be noticed.
Results
Implementing the anti-counterfeiting and tamper-proofing solutions, the pharmaceutical brand confidently launched in China. The security hologram with tamper evidence will be able thwart pilferage and counterfeiting. In the next phase, they will consider adding unique QR codes for consumer engagement.
